Kendal is buying the Chieftain

The Valley News reports that Kendal at Hanover will purchase the Chieftain Motor Inn (see also The Dartmouth. As the News reports, the fondly-recalled 23-room motel was built during the early 1950s on a 10.7-acre parcel along the River just beyond what is now the Kendal continuing-care retirement community:

  1. I expect Kendal to retire it with extreme prejudice… I hope they at least photograph the place before they knock it down, and there might be a clever way to use the sign or some other piece of the Inn in the replacement buildings.

    I think I stayed there with my family in 1985, and I took a cab there from Manchester when the West Lebanon Airport was fogged in once, maybe in 2006.

  2. That was my parents’ favorite place to stay when they came to visit. They became chummy with the owner (who was from Nfld.) who had them over for dinner a couple of times.

    Will Kendal retire this particular Indian symbol?
