The N.H.C. Experimental Farm (assembled 1869-73, sold 1892) in middleground with houses along South Park Street in foreground and the College in the background. The photographer was standing at Prexy's Garden, a hill southeast of town, presumably Velvet Rocks. The Alumni Oval, Alumni Gym and Memorial Field occupied the N.H.C. farm beginning in 1893 (image titled "Dartmouth from Prex's Garden" from American Memory, Historical Collections for the National Digital Library, Library of Congress).
